You never know what you're going to get with television shows. There are plot twists and character deaths that you would never, ever see coming. Of course, live TV adds a whole new element of unpredictably.

Sometimes, the most exciting thing that happens during a live broadcast is that someone reads the teleprompter wrong. Or, someone gets accidentally bleeped when they weren't swearing. Rarer are the times when live TV captures some shocking and controversial moments. Spoiler alert: There are a number of them that involve Saturday Night Live and Kanye West. The are the times when TV networks probably wish they went with a pre-recorded option, but for us viewers, they go down in pop culture history.

Sometimes, it's not the Oscar winners who go down in history. When we look back at the Academy Awards, it's sometimes the surprising things we remember like the actors who got snubbed or those cringe-worthy moments (ahem, Best Picture mix up from 2017). Another thing that leaves a lasting impression is the red carpet.

Those magical looks that make it onto the best-dressed lists are talked about for years, if not decades. That's not to say that the worst looks are easily forgotten about. When award season rolls around, we often find ourselves wondering whether any daring celebrity will wear something as outrageous. It remains to be seen whether anyone will top these *crazy* looks at the 2018 Oscars, but it won't be easy. These are the wildest Oscars outfits of all time.

Oscars Recap: The Biggest Moments at the 2018 Academy Awards

Did you manage to stay up until midnight on Sunday to watch all of the 90th Academy Awards? If you said yes, kudos to you! You're probably exhausted at your desk right now. But if you didn't make it through the whole ceremony because you fell asleep halfway through it, no one is blaming you. These award shows seem to take forever – even when Jimmy Kimmel is giving a jetski to whoever makes the shortest speech!

The best awards are always announced last, too, in an effort to force you to make it through the whole thing. You're lucky if you make it through supporting actress. Some of us tune in just to get major #dressenvy over the jaw-dropping gowns or to keep up with whatever Jennifer Lawrence managed to make headlines for. (Spoiler alert: she climbed over a chair to get to her seat while carrying a glass of wine!) As funny as J.Law is, there were some very important moments at this years Oscars that had to do with race, inclusivity, and representation that will hopefully be making a lasting impact in Hollywood.

Jordan Peele made history as the first black screenwriter to win Best Original Screenplay

Albert L. Ortega/WireImage

When Jordan Peele was snubbed at the Golden Globes for his work on Get Out, the world was angry. Thankfully, it seems that anger has paid off in a big way because he finally has gotten the acknowledgment he deserves for his work on this groundbreaking film. Jordan wrote, produced, and directed the monumental film that shed a light on the very real existence of racism in America today. At the Oscars, he won for Best Original Screenplay and that makes him the first ever black screenwriter to win the award. Which is pretty crazy, by the way, considering the show's been on for 90 years. The Key & Peele actor thanked his wife, Chelsea Peretti, the people who helped him continue working on the film when he wanted to give up, and his mother, who taught him to love in the face of hatred.

Apparently, the world almost didn't have the chance to see Get Out, as Jordan nearly gave up on it. The writer and director said in his acceptance speech, “This means so much to me. I stopped writing this movie about 20 times because I thought it was impossible, I thought it wasn’t gonna work, I thought no one would ever make this movie — but I kept coming back to it because I knew if someone let me make this movie, people would hear it and people would see it.”

Mindy Kaling took B.J. Novak as her date & everyone freaked out

Dear fans of The Office, don't totally lose your minds, but Ryan Howard and Kelly Kapoor went to the Oscars together and it is everything. For many years now, Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak have been BFFs. We've gotten to see them work together on both The Office and The Mindy Project, and now, fans of this friendship got to see them walk the red carpet side-by-side! Mindy brought BJ as her date to the 90th Academy Awards and, as soon as they hit the carpet, the internet just about exploded. Many fans on Twitter were begging for these friends (and former couple) to get back together. Not to fan the flames, but many also suggested that they hoped B.J. was the secret father of Mindy's daughter, Katherine (who Mindy gave birth to in December 2017 and has not announced the father for). We don't need to know if that is true, but we need to see these BFFs walking more red carpets together ASAP!

Rita Moreno wore the same dress she wore to the Oscars in 1962

Rita Moreno proved that there's no shame in being an outfit repeater. And she did it with such style and grace, we don't know if anyone could top her! Rita is already a legend in Hollywood for her years of success and being an EGOT holder (a winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony), but she's only just shown off what a style icon she truly is. She wore the same dress that she wore to the Oscars in 1962 when she won Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. She told E! News that the dress has just been hanging in her closet ever since. The gorgeous gold, silver, and black gown is made out from obi, which is a sash that is normally used as part of traditional Japanese kimonos. We're so happy to see Rita finally found another occasion to wear this dress again because she looks flawless in it!

Time's Up & Hypocricy Called Into Question

Speaking of Gary Oldman's win for Darkest Hour, the Twitterverse wasn't all too happy when the former Harry Potter star took home an award last night considering a domestic abuse allegation that was brought against him by his ex-wife, Donya Fiorentino in 2001. She alleged he beat her with a telephone while their children were present. The Academy tried their hardest to distance themselves from Harvey Weinstein and all of the men who have been accused of heinous crimes in the past few months, but it appears there may be a time limit for the accusations they're willing to take seriously, as not one but two accused abusers were honored by the Academy last night.

Did you raise your eyebrows when Kobe Bryant won an Oscar? Ours nearly shot off of our foreheads! Kobe won for Dear Basketball, a short film he wrote the screenplay for based on a letter he wrote to The Players' Tribune in 2015 announcing his retirement. Kobe's retirement was one of the most celebrated in basketball, but his win at the Oscars felt in poor taste to many considering he was charged with sexually assaulting a woman in Colorado in 2003. While the case did not make it to trial (because the woman did not want to testify in court), it has not left our minds. The basketball player even said in a statement after the event, “After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.” Kobe famously had to change his basketball jersey number after the controversy, but still continued to play for the Los Angeles Lakers for over 10 years after the incident.

Biggest winners of the night

The Shape of Water might not have taken home every Oscar it was nominated for, but the film surely took home enough awards to be very proud. The film was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and wound up winning four of those golden trophies. The Shape of Water won the coveted Best Picture award, along with the equally impressive Best Director, and the awards for Best Original Score and Best Production Design to match! This was the first Oscar win for director/screenwriter Guillermo del Toro. The Mexican director began his acceptance speech by highlighting immigrants, he then namechecked some other big Mexican performers, like Salma Hayek, before saying, “In the last 25 years, I’ve been living in a country all of our own. Part of it is here, part of it is in Europe, part of it is everywhere. Because I think the greatest thing that art does, and that our industry does, is erase the lines in the sand when the world tells us to make them deeper.”

Coco also ended the night by winning both Academy Awards it was nominated for. The Disney/Pixar film took home Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, for the heartbreaking melody “Remember Me.” While it's incredible for a film to go home with all of the Oscars it has been nominated for, this win was also a big one for the Latinx community. The film was an incredible example of representation and inclusivity – Coco featured a diverse cast, a beautiful take on Dia de Los Muertos, and the film was full of Spanish-speaking characters. Co-Director Lee Unkrich dedicated the film's Oscar win to Mexico and delivered this powerful statement: “With Coco, we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can see characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do. Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.”

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri took home fewer Oscars than it took home Golden Globes, but it was still a successful night for the film overall. At the 90th Academy Awards, the movie earned seven nominations and left with two wins in some very big categories! Frances McDormand took home Best Actress for her work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Two of her co-stars, Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell were nominated for Best Supporting Actor – double the chance of winning for the film! Sam took home the Golden Globe earlier this year and he repeated the win by snagging the Oscar as well.

Biggest snubs of the night

Kevin Mazur/WireImage

When it comes to snubs, we don't want to discredit the winners and make them feel bad. But going into Oscars night, there were some folks we'd really hoped would win and some films we thought would have earned a few more accolades. The Oscars came through in a way that the Golden Globes had not for the film Get Out, so everyone was excited when Daniel Kaluuya earned a Best Actor nomination. But he wound up losing to veteran actor, Gary Oldman for his work Darkest Hour.

A more surprising snub of the night came up for the film Call Me By Your Name. Heading into awards season, there was so much buzz around this coming-of-age story, along with its stars, Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. There was no way that Timothée would win Best Actor when he was up against more seasoned actors, but the other losses the film took were surprising. The film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Original Song, but it only won for Best Screenplay. Armie Hamie didn't even earn a nod for Best Supporting Actor at this years Oscars! Call Me By Your Name might not have gotten the acknowledgment it deserved, but we will love it always.

17 Actors Who Have Taken Their Moms to the Oscars

Paramount Pictures

The ‘90s are back, from velvet chokers to tying your flannel shirt around your waist and bringing your mom as your plus one to the Academy Awards, like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon did when they were nominated for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting.

Choosing a date for the Oscars is nothing to scoff at. Making your red carpet debut with someone who you just started dating can be way too big a deal (and a little overwhelming), but going stag might be a bit lonely. For these stars, it was a no-brainer who they wanted to accompany them on the red carpet: their mothers. Who better to join them on their night of success than the women who made them the people they are?

Pretty much everyone in the world loves a good gossip, especially when scandals and secrets crop up that involve the rich and famous. Did they get into a feud with another famous face? Thousands and thousands of articles are published each day that only fuel this never-ending rumor mill.

While your standard rumors – like love life gossip or high-profile arguments – are fairly easy to brush off, every now and then a story comes up that’s just too weird to ignore. Even if the gossip turns out to be totally false (and in some cases, HOW could it be true?!), we can’t help but be interested when celebs are accused of acting even stranger than usual. Which famous actor allegedly got a gerbil stuck up his butt? Which singer is apparently a Satanist? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Tom Hardy Got A Leonardo DiCaprio Tattoo After Losing Oscars Bet

Tom Hardy Got a Leonardo DiCaprio Tattoo After Losing Oscars Bet leo dicaprio gif

Here’s a little word of advice: Never make a bet involving a tattoo unless you’re absolutely sure you’re going to win the bet. Just ask Tom Hardy. The actor got a Leonardo DiCaprio tattoo after losing a bet to… Leonardo DiCaprio. Yes, you’ve read that correctly – and there’s a photo to prove it. Two years after losing the bet, Tom kept his promise by getting a “Leo knows all” tattoo on his right bicep.

Over the weekend, a fan in San Francisco posted a selfie on Instagram with Tom, and you can clearly see the words peeking out from under his T-shirt.

His tattoo will just be a constant reminder to never make a bet like that again! Back in 2016, Leo predicted that Tom would get an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in The Revenant. However, Tom wasn’t as confident in his performance, so they made a bet that if Leo was wrong he would get a tattoo for Tom Hardy and vice versa. It turns out, ~Leo Knows All~. Tom was nominated for best supporting actor, and Leo went ahead and picked a tattoo for his co-star to sport permanently. Though Tom didn’t take home the Oscar in 2016, the bet only relied on a nomination.

Tom waited two years to get the ink and the actor said the wait was all because of Leo’s terrible handwriting. “He wrote, in this really shitty handwriting: ‘Leo knows everything.’ Ha! I was like, ‘OK, I’ll get it done, but you have to write it properly,'” Tom revealed to Esquire just after he lost the bet.

The following year, Tom was asked about the pending tattoo yet again in an interview with Vanity Fair. This time he revealed that had Leo lost the bet, he would have never permanently inked his body.

“F**ker. He would never get a tattoo if he lost that bet!” he said. “It was just one-way. I’m covered in shit tattoos anyway, so it doesn’t make any difference to me. If I got a big bold ‘Leo’ right across my thigh or across my face. It’s just that, isn’t it? You bet a tattoo, you lose. That’s what happens.”

Not only are we obsessed with Leo and Tom’s bromance, but it’ll be hilarious to see Leo’s name on Tom’s arm in his next movie, Venom. (If they don’t edit it out, of course.) He will play Eddie Brock in the new superhero movie, which is set for release on October 5, 2018. Tom will suit up to play a villain who joins forces with an alien in order to take down Spider-Man.

Tom shared a photo on Instagram of his tatted body, writing “Wrapped. Life back. Bye.”

Although there’s no sign of his “Leo knows all” tattoo in this particular pic, you can be sure that fans everywhere will be on the lookout for it from now on!

Taraji P. Henson Wasn’t Shading Ryan Seacrest At The Oscars, She Was Standing By Him

Taraji P Henson Wasn t Shading Ryan Seacrest at the Oscars She Was Standing By Him giphy 2 1 gif

E!

With the #TimesUp movement making major strides this awards season, recent Hollywood sexual assault allegations were at the forefront of a lot of people’s minds as they watched the Academy Awards on Sunday night. But when it comes to Ryan Seacrest, who was accused of assaulting his E! stylist last year, the routine remained the same, and he still hosted the red carpet for the network. There had been rumors that the PR teams for many celebrities encouraged them to avoid the American Idol host on the carpet, and that E! was delaying the broadcast a few minutes so they could stay on top of any less-than-positive comments made towards Ryan.

Basically, everyone felt pretty certain that something was going to go down. And we thought we’d received the shade we’d been waiting for when Taraji P. Henson wasn’t actually shading Ryan during her interview with him, or the one she took right after.

Despite the fact that an investigation conducted by E! couldn’t find any evidence of misconduct, last week, stylist Suzy Hardy shared more details about her story involving abuse she says she suffered while working for Ryan, and she had a co-worker back her story. This unnamed witness actually said they were present for some of the examples of Ryan’s sexual misconduct towards Suzy. It would seem that E! and American Idol are sticking by the 43-year-old host, but some people aren’t buying it. And after Taraji’s interaction with him on the red carpet, it looked like she might have made a jab at him.

She told him, “the universe has a way of taking care of good people. You know what I mean?” Immediately, Twitter lit up with people freaking out, pronouncing Taraji as the official queen of shade.

And then, when Taraji talked to Wendi McLendon Covey on ABC’s red carpet coverage, she said, “I’m great now that I’m in your company,” which made people think she was insinuating that she was glad she didn’t have to talk to Ryan anymore.

It instantly seemed like a massive burn, but apparently, that’s not what she meant by her comments at all. While talking to People, she revealed that her comments were “misconstrued,” and her words were actually referencing the fact that Ryan was found innocent. “I did it to keep his chin up,” she told the magazine. “It’s an awkward position to be in. He’s been cleared, but anyone can say anything.”

Later, Ryan also tweeted about his run-in with Taraji, as well as sharing some love to make it absolutely clear that there’s no feud between them whatsoever.

So not other was she not shading him, she was actually sticking up for him?! Well, this is confusing. Her words about karma still stand. The universe does have a way of taking care of good people, and it’s only a matter of time before we find out if Ryan Seacrest is one of them.

Sometimes our faves just act out in ways that we don’t understand and never saw coming. Sometimes it’s America’s sweetheart doing something seriously out-of-character, or two low-key celebrities flat-out brawling on social media – time and time again, celebrities hit us with some serious “WTF” moments and shocking scandals that are completely unexpected.

So many crazy things happen every day in Hollywood that while we may remember Winona Ryder shoplifting 20 years down the line, other moments seem to fade from our memories almost immediately – no matter how shocking they were at the time. While some of these moments should definitely be better remembered by the masses, others we can dismiss as one-time bizarre behavior that doesn’t have to totally change the way we think about the star in question.

ABC

It’s that time of year again: awards show season. Week after week, we’ll be treated to the sight of others richer and more famous than ourselves getting all dressed up to receive recognition for their talents. Things kicked off with the Golden Globes, but they’ve really barely begun. We’ve got the Oscars, the Grammys, and numerous other shows to get through yet in 2018.

Watching the same people receive the same awards week-in week-out would get a little boring if it weren’t for the total unpredictability of the awards shows themselves. They’ve been the source of numerous controversies, hilarious moments, unexpected kisses, and totally expected fall-outs. Celebs have managed to offend each other, the general public, and on one occasion the Vatican at these prestigious events. On other occasions, they’ve managed to use the spotlight for good to promote those less fortunate than themselves. Whatever the details, there are a number of infamous awards show incidents that have really stuck in our minds…
